2001 - A company from Montana specializing in historic restoration has contacted John Crane about helping with the project.

4/28/01 - Second Meeting - The second meeting for the Bayley House Restoration Project was held Saturday, April 28, 2001. Those interested in volunteering for the project were invited to meet at the Bayley House in Pilot Hill at 1:00 p.m. to learn more about the project and to sign up to volunteer.

John Crane, Pilot Hill representative for the Georgetown Divide Recreation District, and several interested individuals from the community were in attendance. The group met on the property in the large barn, which has been restored by the District with concrete slab, reinforced framing, and interior walls. (Use of the improved barn for fundraising purposes was discussed.)

Construction plans for the Bayley House and a plot plan of the 10-acre parcel were reviewed and discussed, and the group walked the property to see its boundaries while discussing its possible uses.

Attendees were shown some of the remaining original woodwork from the Bayley House, including the French doors accessing the balcony, doors with room numbers, the front doors, decorative mouldings from the exterior columns, parts of stair railings, and fireplace mouldings/mantels. One door was attractively hand-painted with a wood grain that looked like cherry. Some of the original glass remains.

Although more of the bricks have fallen from the Bayley House, extending the hole in the wall to the roofline, the additional damage probably won't affect the restoration project to any significant degree.

Due to the scope of the project, the need for volunteer grant writers was emphasized. Grant money, for which the Bayley House may qualify, is available from several sources. Another urgent need is for finding a Project Manager who can pull the project together. All persons willing and able to help with this historical restoration are invited to attend our next meeting (TBA) and/or sign up online. Volunteer organizations and historical societies will be contacted for assistance in finding the help needed.

The project needs:

    • Project Manager
    • Grant Writers
    • Public Speakers
    • Special Events Coordinators
    • Secretarial Support
    • Researchers
    • Legal Counsel

4/2/01 - Then & Now: The Bayley House segment on the Central Valley Chronicles on KVIE Channel 6, 7:00 p.m.

3/01 - Applied for a grant from the State of California-Office of Historic Preservation for a portion of the California Heritage Fund(which was funded by the year 2000's Proposition 12) in order to complete a stabilization/ weatherization project on the Bayley House(thank you to Julie McDonald for writing the proposal)

1/27/01 - Kick-off Meeting - The first Bayley House meeting was held on January 27 at the Nugget Café in Cool and was supported by County Supervisor Penny Humphreys, the Georgetown Divide Recreation District, the Mountain Democrat, and interested individuals. Brainstorming ideas presented about the use of the 10,000 sqare foot Bayley House, once restored, included a museum, library, office space, art gallery, snack bar or cafe, conference center, activity room for light sports like ping pong and other table games, lodging, restaurant, historic re-enactments, plays, movies, and music. The 10 acres could be used for an orchard, vineyard, community garden, park, habitat preservation, nature trails designed with physically disabled persons in mind, baseball field, tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic area, playground, track with exercise equipment. Pilot Hill is a short trip from Auburn, Placerville, and El Dorado Hills and is convenient to local residents throughout the area.

In addition to getting committees formed with "can-do" volunteers, projects in the works include a banner at the Bayley House informing passersby of the restoration project and directing attention to the Bayley House website, and special Bayley House letterhead for a letter-writing campaign. Also noteworthy is the proposed State historic preservation funding that the Bayley House will likely qualify for when the program is implemented in the near future.

This website has volunteer sign-up forms and a list of current Project contributors. Viewers can also submit their comments and suggestions online. It's a quick and easy way to keep everyone updated on the progress of the project and to get important feedback from the community.

John Crane of the Georgetown Divide Recreation District, owners of the Bayley House, asks that those who plan to attend the April 28 meeting at the Bayley House please RSVP online (above), by e-mail at register@thebayleyhouse.com, or by mail to Bayley House, P.O. Box 993, Placerville, CA 95667. All that is needed is your name, address, phone number, and mention of the Bayley House Meeting.
