El Dorado County stretches along US 50 from the rolling foothills east of Sacramento, starting at El Dorado Hills, to the rugged alpine peaks high in the Sierras at the Lake Tahoe Basin. The Mother Lode highway, SR 49, crosses US 50 in Placerville, the County seat. The County ends at the state line between California and Nevada at South Lake Tahoe.
