Where Do All the Searches Happen?
by Paul Duer

Where do the most losable people go to get lost? Should a SAR junkie move to Coloma or to Camino to be near the action? Should we spend our weekends hanging out in Kyburz or in Cool waiting for a call?

Just for fun, and because I truly was curious, I decided to find out what areas of the county are the hottest from a SAR perspective. Taking 68 callouts that have come my way over the last few years, I grouped them together by region. The results show that the areas we get called out to most often are:
.
1st Place (tie):
Kelsey/Georgetown/Wentworth Springs area
Ice House/Loon Lake area
18%
18%
2nd Place:
  Iron Mountain/Highway 88 area
15%
3rd Place:
  Grizzly Flat/Mt Aukum/Caldor area
12%

Folsom Lake/Rescue/Latrobe area
Wrights Lake/Desolation Wilderness area
Tahoe area
Placerville/Shingle/Diamond Springs area
Kyburz/Silver Fork area

Naturally, this applies to West Slope teams. The statistics for the Tahoe team would be much different.

To narrow the locations down even further, I located each search scene on the appropriate topographic map, then counted the times each topo map was used. The results, which show what maps seem to have the most searches on them, will appear soon.
