NASAR Certification Standards
From July 1997 Lost & Found Newsletter

The SAR-Tech Program - In 1989, the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) adopted national standards for the minimum knowledge and performance of persons involved in search and rescue operations. NASAR encourages local SAR units around the nation to strive for these levels of professional performance.

Incident Command System SAR Position Descriptions:

SAR Technician: Type I | Type II | Type III

SAR TECHNICIAN - Type I
Has advanced knowledge and field performance competence.

The standards for STI are still being developed, and there is only one person west of Mississippi who has attained that level of competence.

SAR TECHNICIAN - Type II
Has basic knowledge skills and field performance competence.

To become a STII (the most common level), you must take a written exam with 70% passing score, plus 6 field practical stations:

  • Land Navigation
  • Tracking
  • 24-hr Pack
  • Rope Skills
  • Patient Transportation
  • Search Techniques

SAR TECHNICIAN - Type III
Has basic knowledge skills.

To become a STIII, you take a written test with 70% passing grade.

The text is the same for all levels, "Search and Rescue Fundamentals", by Cooper, LaValla and Stoffel, Third Ed., 1990.

Steve Corey, STI, has an active program of testing, and can be contacted at Steven@secco.com or (510) 881-7657. The next test will be announced.
