2000 - 2009 Searches

• Missing 4WD Visitor with Texas Plates - 2008

EDSO was notified on March 11, 2008, about "Jeff" who went off in his black Jeep Rubicon with Texas license plates, in the south county, east of Somerset. Deputy Morgan called out OHV teams to run the roads; no helicopter was available. Search was resumed on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, with the additional callout for Management and Ground teams. CHP H-20 was summoned for a flyover.

Jeff was found by a USFS Ranger at Pi Pi Campground. He was stuck in the snow there for awhile.

We ran into Jeff's cousin out on Caldor Road on Tuesday evening. He reported that Jeff was looking for No Name Campground, which he thought was off North-South Road near where the dad's ashes were deposited. Had a feeling that is where we would find him.

The first day's resources were all or nearly all OHV units on the lookout for the subject's black 2008 Jeep. Without the vehicle, the search had no PLS to provide an unequivocal starting point.

However, late that evening a witness claimed to have seen the subject near the Rocky Bar Road river crossing. Consequently, Foot, Management, Mounted and (later) CHP helicopter H20 were all employed in the second and final day's efforts. PD.

First day's search was facilitated by Deputy Jamie Morgan, who set-up at the fire station and utilized OHV and other SAR members as ride alongs, where they did a sweep of the most likely 4WD and access roads within a 20-mile radius from NNE to south, including the Rocky Bar Road and others that would access into the south-south-east section by 8:30 p.m. The most likely area for future search was outlined to be into the south-south east section perhaps from north south road via Omo Ranch Road. The news coverage viewed by a local four-wheel driver and fisherman brought in a witness of our subject on Rocky Bar Road down near the river cross. This provided a point last seen and two OHV units were re-assigned to sweep the road down to the river and search likely trouble spots. The teams reported the area clear and recommend a detailed sweep of the aera in the morning coupled with sweep out to access roads back into the south-south east section. The search was called for the night/early morning around 2:00 a.m., to be restarted at first light (6:00 am).
