• Horsetail Falls - 1999
At about 2:00 p.m. on July 31, 1999, Deputy Fleck initiated a page out for an injured hiker. The RP was an uninvolved party who had witnessed a hiker fall from some distance away and called from her cell phone.
Responding were Haen, Stembridge, Matikosh, Moss, both Pratts, Butts, Dickenson, Truesdell, Hambel, House, Ranalla, Haworth, Tolhurst and Silvestri, as well as two Lake Valley Firefighters, four USFS guys, one USFS helicopter (and a partridge in a pear tree).
The RP did not give a clear location so five teams were deployed to search the Horsetail Falls drainage with the helicopter assisting from above. After about 45 minutes, Teams 1 and 2 came across the victim who was being helped down the trail by his guardian. The 12-year-old victim had fallen about 25-30 feet and was scraped up and bruised; however, his guardian refused medical assistance and all teams were recalled.
To assure that the time spent was not a total loss, some of us found a place to test the water which was just perfect for a quick swim before debriefing at Bob Dogs.
