Lily Lake Rope Rescue
August 1999
SAR volunteers were called out for an injured hiker 300 feet from the Glen Alpine Trail/Road. Responding were Haen, Truesdell, Lorack, Matikosh, Rodgerts, the Pratts, Partridge, Paiva, Marino, Silvestry, Butts, Stembridge, Haworth, House Dickenson and Moore.
Upon arrival at the scene I quickly did a face to face with Fallen Leaf Lake Fire and assumed the role of Operations. With other people tending to the victim, I did a walk around and tried to determine what sort of system would be needed and whether it would be a high or low angle to raise the victim from the gully.
Opting for the low angle the setup was quickly achieved by the well trained rope rescue team. The stokes was set up and the victim packaged and when my role call was done she was raised quickly and efficiently by our awesome haul team. As soon as the victim arrived at the top of the gully the rope system was detached from the litter and she was carried to the waiting SARburban. With speedracer Dickinson at the wheel the victim was driven to the ambulance down Glen Alpine Road in record time, and she only locked up the brakes a few times.
All in all I would have to say that this mission was a pleasant surprise for me. I gave people assignments and they were completed with very little uncertainty. This allowed me to step back from the system and look at the "big picture" and see what else needed to be done.
Thank you all for your quick response to the mission and the great attendance of the trainings that allowed you to develop your skills and perform as exemplary as you all did!!!
