Ground Team
Training | Equipment | Meetings | History
Adapted from the El Dorado County SAR Field Training Manual:
The Ground Team is our largest specialty team. Ground searchers are specialists in searching an area by walking through it. They are trained observers, alert for any clues that the lost person may have left behind.
Ground searchers are valued for their rapid response, flexibility and thoroughness. They can work night or day, in virtually any weather or terrain. They can fly in helicopters, and unlike mechanized teams, may legally enter wilderness areas. Moving at a walking pace directly on the ground, they can spot even small clues. When trained in special search techniques, they are even more effective.
Regardless of whether they join the specialized Ground Team, all SAR members are expected to have equipment and minimum training for ground searches.
Training
Ground Team members are expected to attend training regularly, and to make progress in mastering the basic subjects:
First Aid
CPR
Suvival
Search Theory
Clue Awareness
Wilderness Navigation
Helicopter Safety
Radio Procedures
Tracking
Lost Person Behavior
Many searchers go on to become cliff rescue or swiftwater rescue specialists, ham radio operators, EMT's, etc.
Hiking with a full pack at high altitude for long periods is physically demanding. Searchers need not be athletes, but they must be in good health.
Equipment
In addition to the basic El Dorado SAR requirements, ground searchers must have:
In Search Pack:
Two large plastic trash bags
Tracking stick
Watch
Earplugs
Spare glasses
Goggles or safety glasses
Bandana
Personal medications
Available in Vehicle:
Rain gear
Extra clothing
Sleeping bag
High-powered flashlight
Spare batteries and bulb
Light stove
Cooking and eating utensils
Food for 48 hours
A pack, bag or box to hold all the items above
Meetings
The Ground Team meet before the SAR General meeting. (See Calendar)
History
Ground searching has always been considered SAR's core capability since its inception in 1985. However, as specialty teams were added over the years, it began to lose emphasis. The specialized Ground Team was created to renew and expand foot searching skills.
Teams:
Foot Search | 4-Wheel Drive (OHV) | Mounted | Search Management | Canine | Swiftwater | High Angle (Cliff)
