Mountain Bike Team

The Mountain Bike Team is one of the five specialty teams in Sierra West SAR. The Mountain Bike Team's specialties are:
- Covering established trails quickly
- Running containment on roads, paths and trails
- Transporting light equipment
As with other units, members are always sent out in teams of at least two.

Requirements
Members must:
provide their own mountain bike and related equipment (helmet, repair kit, and search pack) and
be in excellent physical condition and able to ride a mountain bike on and off the road for one day.
Equipment
In addition to the list required for all EDSAR personnel and the foot search equipment required for Sierra West personnel, members must have the following equipment:
Mountain bike - standard with 26" rims, 18 speeds preferred.
Headlamp on bike
Tire pump
Tire repair kit with 2 inner tubes, patch kit, bike tools and chain links
Approved helmet
Headlamp for helmet
Gloves
Long pants
Elbow and knee pads optional
Safety glasses
Training
In addition to the lists required for all EDSAR personnel and the foot search training required for Sierra West personnel, members must be able to:
Demonstrate a safety check
Demonstrate proper slow riding techniques
Demonstrate proper riding and stopping techniques on a variety of surfaces
Jump over objects the size of a small ditch, a street curb, and a large boulder.
Repair tires and chains
Meetings
The Mountain Bike Team meets as part of the Sierra West unit at the monthly SAR general meetings.
